Mets put Luis Guillormé on injured list

The Mets place infielders Luis Guillome on the 10-day injured list because of a groin strain, the team said. MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported on the diagnosis and the potential 3-4 week recovery period Guillorme will require just before the team made it official (Twitter link). Once Guillorme recovers from the injury he will need some time to rebuild and complete a rehab spell so he could be on the shelf for six weeks, The New York Post’s Mike Puma said tweets.

There had already been speculation about top prospects Brett Baty He joined the Mets to make his big-league debut in place of Guillorme, but manager Buck Showalter denied those rumors in a meeting with reporters today. Neither Baty nor mark winch are currently considered options to take Guillorme’s place on the list, DiComo tweets.

Losing Guillorme is tough for the Mets, whose infield mix has been thinning out a bit lately. Edward Escobar is not on the injured list, but is struggling with weird complaints. He’s in the lineup tonight, but the veteran switch-hitter is limited to left-hand hitting for now. JD Davismeanwhile, was traded to the Giants ahead of the Aug. 2 trading deadline.

Guillorme was solid on both sides of the ball in 2022, hitting .283/.355/.357 while hitting a career-high 289 plate appearances. He offers next to no power, but has also displayed strong bat-to-ball and plate discipline skills, as evidenced by a career-low strikeout rate of 13.5% and a sharp walk rate of 10%.

It’s not yet clear how the Mets will handle filling Guillorme’s spot on the roster, though Showalter has hinted that someone is on the way to filling that spot, noting in particular the need to add a player who could, if necessary can also cover some work in the middle infield . (Guillorme is the team’s sole substitute for shortstop Franz Lindor.) Speculatively, the Mets have both JT puzzle and Deven Marrero as veteran options at Triple-A Syracuse, although there was no indication from the team that either would be included in the MLB roster.

Guillorme isn’t the only player the Mets will be without for the time being, either. Showalter pointed to this catcher Thomas Nest is absent from the club due to illness, prompting the Mets to recall the catcher Michael Perez by Triple A. Perez, who was acquired by the Pirates in late July, will make his team debut if he comes into a game while Nido is unavailable.
